Kouropalates

Kouropalates
Title bestowed chiefly on members of the imperial family and on foreign princes. It was inferior only to caesar and nobilissimos (qq.v.) in the Kletorologion of Philotheos (q.v.). By the 11th century, when Byzantine titles had become less attractive to foreigners, it was refused by Robert Guiscard for his son, and refused by Roussel de Ballieul (qq.v.).
